Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe students’ algebraic thinking abilities in solving Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) problems on the topic of systems of linear equations in two variables (SPLDV) based on brain dominance. The method used in this study was a case study with a qualitative approach. Data collection methods included test questions and unstructured interviews. The research subjects consisted of 4 students out of 29 eighth-grade students in Class VIII-I at SMP Negeri 1 Ciawi, Tasikmalaya, namely S7, S16, S1, and S11. The data analysis techniques used in this study were data reduction, data presentation and drawing conclusion. The research findings indicate that all four subjects were able to meet the indicators of generalization, abstraction, modeling, and organization. However, S7 and S11 were unable to meet the indicators for dynamic thinking, while S1 was unable to meet the indicators for analytical thinking. Furthermore, a more in-depth analysis was conducted, which revealed that S7 and S16 tended to be thorough, detailed, and careful when solving problems. Meanwhile, S1 and S11 tended to use visuals or images when completing their answers and did so intuitively. On the other hand, S1 and S11 made several errors in writing their answers due to a lack of attention to detail and a failure to double-check their work.
